We strongly condemn the arrest of 42 activists that included Revd Marco Sulayao, an IFI clergy, and a daughter of the slain Bayan Muna coordinator Jose Reynaldo Porquia, this morning in Iloilo City. Jose Reynaldo Porquia was slain yesterday, and the group was holding an indignation and protest caravan to demand justice for his killing. We denounce the highhanded action of the PNP personnel in arresting them. The executive order of enhanced community quarantine does not quash the constitutional rights of any Filipino citizen. We call for their immediate release even as we demand justice for the murder of Jose Reynaldo Porquia. We ask the Duterte government and its state security officers not to take advantage of the crisis to quell the people’s rights to life, to free speech, to organize and to peaceful assemblies and to repress militant organizations and church people.
The Most Revd Rhee M. Timbang, Obispo Maximo, Iglesia Filipina Independiente, May 1, 2020
